FOOD QUESTIONS

Question:  "What kind of puppy food do you feed the puppies so I know what kind to buy?"

Answer:  As a rule we do try not to feed just one brand of puppy food. Over the weeks from the time they first start weaning until they leave our home we will usually have them accustomed to at least two or three different brands of puppy food. The most common brands we feed them are: Purina Puppy Chow, Pedigree, Ukanuba, and at least one "generic" brand either Food Lion of Wal-mart puppy food. We used to start the puppies out on watered down canned food and then wean them to the dry food but after the big pet food recall a few years ago with the canned foods we stopped doing that and we now start them out with watered down dry food and then wean them over to just the dry food. The reason we use a variety of brands is so that the pups will not be as "finicky" about their food. We have done this with our own dogs and have found it quite beneficial over the years when there has been recalls on various brands of dog foods. It is much easier to change them over to something else until the recall is resolved if they are not finicky about a particular brand.

Question:  "Why do you charge so much for your puppies?"

Answer:  As a rule for us, selling puppies is definitely not all about the money. We would always prefer to know our puppies are going to a loving and caring home above all else. However, there are a lot of expenses involved in producing a litter of puppies, even the ones that go on way before the two dogs are mated. We have daily and annual expenses involved in raising all of our own Boxers in order to maintain a healthy home environment for all of our dogs, not just our breeding stock. We generally base our selling price in a range that will allow us to at least "break even" on our specific litter expenses and hopefully recoup at least most of our normal everyday and annual expenses involved in raising all of our dogs. We feel that if we are not raising all of our dogs in a healthy and safe environment than we really are not able to provide a healthy and safe environment for raising puppies. After being asked this question so many times I decided to put it all down in black and white, so to speak, and created a list of expenses and compared it to how much money we take in for an average size litter. I've added the list in pdf format to our website to share with anyone who is interested in seeing exactly what we do with the money we take in from selling our puppies.
